How to Progress to a Planche
Short answer: Build straight-arm planche leans and scapular strength before touching a tuck planche. Then climb one rung at a time: lockout hold → leaning hold → protraction reps → tucked L-sit → rocking tuck → foot-assisted tuck. Skip a step and you train a bent-arm compensation that doesn't transfer — you cannot fake your way to a real planche.
What the evidence says
Calisthenics coach Chris Heria — 15+ years of training, founder of THENX — is blunt about the single biggest mistake: attempting a tuck planche before you own a solid straight-arm planche lean. When you skip that foundation, your elbows bend under load to compensate, and you spend months grooving a pattern that has nothing to do with the real skill. The fix is always regression. His progression ladder runs in this order: push-up-position lockout hold → leaning hold with hands near the waistline → protraction reps → tucked L-sit hold-and-lower → rocking tuck → foot-assisted tuck planche. Every rung has to be owned before the next one is touched.
Underneath all of it is scapular strength — what Heria calls the hidden foundation of every upper-body calisthenics skill. He trains it from day one regardless of level: hanging scapular pull-ups, scapular push-ups, plank protractions, front-lever retractions. This isn't optional prep work you do for a week and move on from. It's an ongoing pillar. His working-set formula reflects how seriously he treats time under tension: combine a roughly three-second isometric hold, a slow negative, and an explosive concentric all within the same set — not as separate sessions, but stacked inside a single working rep.
Mike Thurston provides useful real-world proof here. He came in with 18–19 years of serious weight training — a 200 kg squat, 250 kg deadlift, 160 kg bench — and exactly two prior calisthenics sessions. Using Heria's foot-assisted progression, he held a tuck planche on his first real attempt. His read afterward: "mentally harder than physically." That landing matters for two reasons. First, it confirms the progression ladder actually works. Second, it confirms that planche is fundamentally a skill, not a raw-strength problem — a very strong person still had to climb every rung to get there. US national gymnastics coach Georgie Valdez (Nova Gymnastics) noted that despite how brutally difficult planche is to achieve, it scores low on the gymnastics difficulty scale — further evidence that this is a strength-skill with a specific motor pattern, not a feat of absolute force.
The catch — where most people stall
The most common failure mode is connective tissue running behind muscle adaptation. Heria is explicit: tendons and ligaments adapt far slower than muscle. If you jump rungs because your muscles feel ready, you are almost certainly outpacing your tendons — and the result is chronic wrist or elbow pain that sidelines you for weeks. Fingers are a useful illustration: they have no muscles of their own; all force travels from the forearms through tendons. Start fingertip work with planks and wall leans, not loaded holds.
The second failure mode is resistance-band misuse. Bands can be legitimate tools, but Heria flags a specific threshold: if the band is doing more than roughly half the work, it's the wrong band — and if the pull angle doesn't match the real skill, you're training a false force pattern that won't transfer. On top of both of these: do not train to absolute failure. Heria's line is direct — "I get results, but I don't get sore." Overreaching in calisthenics doesn't just cost you a day; it costs you three to four days of progress minimum and raises injury risk meaningfully.
Run your own experiment
Baseline (Week 1). Before you touch the ladder, establish two numbers: how long you can hold a straight-arm planche lean with good protraction, and how many clean scapular push-ups you can complete without compensating. Write them down. This is your starting line.
Drill the ladder 3–4x per week (Weeks 1–4). Work the current rung you cannot yet own. For each set, apply Heria's working-set formula: three-second isometric hold at the hardest position, then a controlled negative, then an explosive concentric return. Do not rush to the next rung. If you are using a band, check that it's doing less than half the work; if it's doing more, it's the wrong resistance.
Progress one variable per week. Either extend the hold duration by one second, add one rep, or reduce band assistance — never more than one change at a time. If connective tissue feels stressed (wrists, elbows), hold the current variable and add another week before advancing.
Re-test your baseline at Week 4–6. Measure the same two numbers you recorded on day one: lean hold duration and scapular push-up quality. If both have moved, the ladder is working. If one hasn't, that is your bottleneck — address it directly before continuing up the progression.
FAQ
How long does it actually take to get a planche? Expect months to years depending on your starting point, not weeks. Connective tissue adapts slowly regardless of strength level. Thurston — an elite-level lifter — landed a tuck planche in one session using proper progressions, but the tuck is the first real rung, not the destination. Full planche is a long-game skill.
Can I train planche every day? Heria advises against training to failure and flags three to four days of recovery loss when you overreach. Most practitioners train planche-specific work three to four sessions per week, not daily, to allow connective tissue and nervous system recovery between sessions.
Does planche load your full bodyweight? Heria estimates a planche push-up loads roughly 100% of bodyweight — but be clear this is his coaching estimate, not a lab-measured figure. The practical point holds: it is a very high relative load, which is exactly why the straight-arm foundation and progressive ladder exist before you attempt it.
Is planche harder if you're heavier? Yes, mechanically — more mass means more torque on the shoulder and wrist complex. Heria notes that difficulty compounds significantly per progression step (his qualitative coaching estimate, not a measured ratio). Heavier athletes generally need more time at each rung, not a different ladder.
